Book Chat Radio: Thank you for joining us today, Katherine. Your novel, The Sower of Black Field, delves into an intriguing part of history. Can you tell us what inspired you to write this story?
Katherine Koch: Thank you for having me. I was inspired by the story of my great-uncle, Fr. Viktor Koch, an American priest who served in Nazi Germany. His experience in Schwarzenfeld, a small Bavarian town during World War II, captivated me. This town had a complex environment: Catholic, resistant to the Nazi regime, yet deeply affected by the war. I wanted to bring light to the nuances of the German experience and the role of faith amidst such turmoil.

Book Chat Radio: One of the central themes in your novel is the tension between faith and political ideologies, especially with Fr. Viktor’s struggle against Nazi rule. Can you share more about the importance of his faith in shaping his decisions?
Katherine Koch: Fr. Viktor’s faith is at the heart of the novel. His American upbringing gave him a strong belief in freedom of speech and religion—values that starkly contrasted with the Nazi regime’s oppression. Despite the danger, he stayed in Germany because he believed his faith called him to protect those suffering. His steadfastness and willingness to speak out, even at great personal risk, was rooted in his belief that God placed him there for a purpose. This conviction is what drives his character throughout the novel.

Book Chat Radio: The character of Wilhelm Seiz is fascinating—a man torn between his role in the Reich and his humanitarian work. How did you approach writing such a morally complex figure?
Katherine Koch: Seiz represents the gray areas that existed within the Nazi regime. He’s not purely evil or good; he’s someone caught between duty to the Reich and his natural inclination toward charity. Writing him allowed me to explore the inner conflicts many Germans likely faced—loyalty to their country versus the horrors they were witnessing. Seiz’s transformation through his interactions with Fr. Viktor is central to the story’s moral tension.

Book Chat Radio: The setting, the small town of Schwarzenfeld, plays a pivotal role in shaping the story. How much of the historical setting did you incorporate into your narrative?
Katherine Koch: Almost all of it. I spent years researching Schwarzenfeld and interviewing the people who lived through the war. The town had a unique position in Bavaria, being deeply Catholic and somewhat resistant to Nazi ideology. It was also influenced by the Passionist order, which created a different atmosphere from other parts of the Reich. I aimed to capture the real sense of place, from the oppressive air of the Third Reich to the resilience of the townspeople.

Book Chat Radio: How do you think your novel adds to the broader understanding of World War II and Holocaust history?
Katherine Koch: My goal was to humanize the experiences of ordinary Germans who lived under the Nazi regime and to show that not everyone was complicit. Many were caught in a complex web of fear, faith, and duty. Fr. Viktor’s story challenges readers to consider the moral choices individuals faced and the courage required to stand against a regime. His defense of the town from American liberators who were outraged by the discovery of a mass grave of Holocaust victims is a powerful reminder of the complexities of wartime morality.

Book Chat Radio: What do you hope readers take away from The Sower of Black Field?
Katherine Koch: I hope readers walk away with a deeper understanding of the moral gray areas in wartime and the importance of faith, courage, and empathy. It’s easy to pass judgment on history from a distance, but I want people to see that, even in the darkest times, there were individuals who fought to uphold their beliefs and protect the vulnerable.

Virtual Book Club Discussion with Greg Demetriou

Hosted by Book Chat Radio

In a recent virtual book club discussion hosted by Book Chat Radio, author Greg Demetriou shared his journey from NYPD detective to CEO and how that path led to the creation of his new book, Ask A CEO: Hints, Tips, and Observations. The discussion touched on key themes from the book, including resilience, leadership, and the power of reinvention.

Resilience and Reinvention

Greg Demetriou’s transition from being an NYPD detective to becoming the CEO of Lorraine Gregory® Communications is a powerful example of resilience and reinvention. After a near-fatal shooting incident abruptly ended his police career, Greg found himself at a life-changing crossroads. Instead of giving in to the challenges, he reinvented himself, channeling his energy into the business world. His journey exemplifies the courage, confidence, and faith required to overcome setbacks and start anew.

When asked how others can find inspiration in his story, Greg emphasized that life’s twists and turns can be daunting, but they also present opportunities. “Courage, confidence, and a good dose of faith lead to transition points. Those attributes form the observation of new opportunities. Faith in yourself makes the first steps possible,” Greg shared. His story encourages readers to embrace change, even when it’s forced upon them, and to believe in their ability to shape new beginnings.

Leadership Lessons

Ask A CEO is packed with valuable leadership lessons drawn from Greg Demetriou’s real-life experiences in the business world. The narratives in the book cover a wide range of topics, from planning and leadership to business development and understanding staff, employees, and clients. Greg’s advice is grounded in practical, hands-on experiences rather than abstract theories.

During the discussion, Greg pointed out that the leadership lessons in his book are applicable to businesses and organizations of all types. He believes that the same principles that apply to running a successful marketing agency can be adapted to any industry. “The chapters are based on very real situations and observations,” Greg said. His insights remind readers that the core elements of effective leadership—planning, communication, and empathy—are universal.

The Role of Writing

Greg Demetriou’s passion for writing has played a significant role in his career and personal brand. Initially, writing was a differentiator for the Lorraine Gregory® Communications brand, helping the company stand out in a competitive market. Over time, Greg’s writing evolved into something more—an opportunity to contribute to business and trade publications.

“I am a writer at heart,” Greg revealed during the discussion. He shared how his talent for writing began in fourth grade, when he realized he had a knack for using words. Though his writing talent lay dormant for decades, it came alive again in the business setting. Greg’s journey highlights the importance of pursuing one’s passions, even if they take time to fully develop.

Challenges of Growing a Business

Growing a small print and mail business into a full-service marketing agency was no easy feat. Greg Demetriou faced numerous challenges along the way, particularly in managing the financial aspects of rapid growth. He shared with the book club how being responsible for the livelihoods of family members who worked for the company fueled his determination to succeed.

Greg emphasized that managing double-digit growth required balancing opportunities, costs, risks, and the potential for further expansion. “Managing growth, although a good problem to have, came with challenges of a financial nature: cash flow, increased payroll, technology, and equipment purchases,” Greg explained. His story serves as a reminder that even success comes with its own set of challenges, and navigating them requires careful planning and a strong mindset.

Mindset: Strategies for Overcoming Challenges

When it comes to overcoming business challenges, Greg Demetriou believes that the right mindset is crucial. One of the key strategies he used was recognizing the importance of seeking expert help. “The recognition that you ‘don’t know what you don’t know’ opens the door to seeking expert help,” Greg said. He stressed the value of consulting with accountants, attorneys, and business coaches to formulate effective strategies.

In addition to seeking expert advice, Greg also created an advisory board of business professionals who could provide guidance on critical decisions. This approach allowed him to benefit from the experience of others while keeping the company on the right track. His story underscores the importance of humility and a willingness to learn from others.

Human-Centered Approach

Throughout his career, Greg Demetriou has emphasized a common-sense, human approach to business issues. During the book club discussion, he highlighted the importance of balancing work and personal life. “Life happens in spite of work,” Greg said, explaining that he has always communicated to his staff that family and outside obligations should not be ignored for the sake of work.

Greg’s human-centered approach encourages flexibility and understanding in the workplace, allowing employees to adjust their schedules as needed, as long as the client’s needs are met. This perspective is especially relevant in today’s business world, where maintaining a healthy work-life balance is becoming increasingly important. Greg’s approach demonstrates that successful businesses can thrive while still prioritizing the well-being of their employees.

Influence of Other CEOs

Greg Demetriou’s interactions with other CEOs have had a profound influence on his business practices and philosophies. The Ask A CEO book draws heavily from the hundreds of interviews Greg has conducted over the years. In fact, his Ask A CEO Interview Series was filmed and produced in-house at LGC Studios and distributed on several streaming platforms.

“There was always a valuable lesson to learn from other CEOs and their experience in the corner office,” Greg said. By listening to the insights of other leaders, Greg has been able to refine his own approach to business and leadership. His willingness to learn from others is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared wisdom.

Conclusion

Greg Demetriou’s journey from NYPD detective to successful CEO and author is an inspiring story of resilience, reinvention, and the power of human connection. His book, Ask A CEO: Hints, Tips, and Observations, offers valuable insights for anyone looking to grow as a leader, overcome challenges, and navigate the complexities of business.

As Greg shared during the virtual book club discussion, the key to success lies in balancing courage with humility, seeking guidance when needed, and staying true to one’s values. His story encourages all of us to embrace change, pursue our passions, and never stop learning from the experiences of others.

Borrowed Wisdom: How Adopting and Modifying Philosophies Can Enhance Personal Growth

Best-selling author Bret Davis has shared a unique perspective on personal growth in his book, Bretisms: Adopted, Borrowed and Modified Philosophies For a Life with LESS ANXIETY and MORE CONFIDENCE. The book is a treasure trove of wisdom, filled with sayings and philosophies that Bret has either adopted from others or modified to suit his own needs. This process of borrowing and adapting wisdom plays a crucial role in Bret’s life and offers valuable insights for anyone seeking personal growth. Discover more wisdom at Bretisms.com.

The Concept of Borrowed Wisdom

When asked about the process of adopting and modifying philosophies from others, Bret shares that it begins with careful reflection. “When I hear a saying or philosophy, I think on it,” he explains. “I really take time to marinate on its meaning and what part of it I can adopt as my own to become a more grounded person.”

For Bret, this isn’t a quick or superficial process. He spends time contemplating the deeper meaning of the philosophy and how it might apply to his life. If the philosophy resonates with him “as is,” he adopts it. But if it doesn’t quite fit, he considers how he can modify it to better suit his needs. This flexible approach allows him to integrate wisdom from various sources while making it relevant to his personal experiences.

The idea of borrowing wisdom from others is not new, but Bret’s approach to modifying it is what sets his process apart. By tweaking a philosophy to align with his current stage of growth or his unique circumstances, he ensures that the wisdom he adopts is practical and applicable. It’s this combination of reflection and customization that makes Bret’s philosophies so powerful.

Enhancing Personal Growth Through Reflection and Adaptation

One of the key ways that adopting and modifying philosophies can enhance personal growth is through the process of reflection. Bret explains that when he encounters a new philosophy, he digs deep into its meaning and asks himself a series of questions: How can this philosophy be used to enhance my personal growth? How can I modify it to help me grow? Does this philosophy apply to my current situation or stage of growth?

These reflective questions are essential for turning abstract wisdom into actionable insights. By considering how a philosophy fits into his life, Bret ensures that the wisdom he adopts is relevant to his current challenges and goals. This process of reflection and adaptation encourages continuous personal growth because it allows him to constantly evolve his thinking based on new experiences and insights.

For anyone looking to enhance their own personal growth, this practice of borrowing and modifying wisdom can be incredibly valuable. Rather than simply adopting philosophies without question, taking the time to reflect on their meaning and how they apply to your life can lead to more meaningful and lasting changes. This process encourages self-awareness and critical thinking, both of which are essential for personal development.

The Power of Shared Wisdom

Bret’s book, Bretisms, is filled with philosophies that he has adopted or modified from others over the years. As he shares in the book, these sayings are not all his own creations, but rather a collection of wisdom that he has encountered and made his own. This willingness to borrow wisdom from others reflects a deep understanding that personal growth is not a solitary journey. We are all influenced by the people around us, and by embracing the wisdom of others, we can expand our own perspectives.

One of the personal sayings that Bret has adopted from others is the philosophy of “The eagle that chases two rabbits catches none.” This saying has become a guiding principle in Bret’s life, helping him stay focused on a single task at a time and avoid the distractions that can lead to overwhelm. Although this philosophy was not originally his own, Bret has made it a central part of his daily routine, modifying it to fit his needs and goals.

This philosophy of focus is just one example of how Bret has borrowed wisdom from others to enhance his own life. By adopting and modifying sayings like this, he has been able to stay grounded, reduce anxiety, and achieve his personal and professional goals. For readers of Bretisms, these shared philosophies offer a roadmap for navigating life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.

Practical Tips for Adopting and Modifying Wisdom

If you’re interested in incorporating the practice of borrowing and modifying wisdom into your own life, here are a few practical tips to get started:

  1. Be Open to New Ideas: When you encounter a new philosophy or saying, approach it with an open mind. Don’t dismiss it just because it doesn’t immediately resonate with you. Take the time to think deeply about its meaning and potential applications.
  2. Reflect on Its Relevance: Ask yourself questions about the philosophy’s relevance to your life. How can it enhance your personal growth? Does it apply to your current situation or stage of growth? This reflection will help you determine whether the philosophy is worth adopting.
  3. Customize It to Fit Your Needs: If a philosophy doesn’t quite fit your circumstances, consider how you can modify it. By tweaking the wisdom to align with your unique needs and goals, you can make it more applicable to your life.
  4. Incorporate It into Your Daily Routine: Once you’ve adopted or modified a philosophy, integrate it into your daily routine. Use it as a reminder to stay focused, grounded, or positive throughout the day.
  5. Share Your Wisdom: Just as Bret has shared the philosophies that have impacted his life, consider sharing the wisdom you’ve borrowed with others. Personal growth is often enhanced through community, and by sharing your insights, you can help others on their journey as well.

Conclusion

Borrowing and modifying wisdom from others is a powerful practice that can lead to profound personal growth. As Bret Davis has demonstrated in Bretisms, this process of reflection, adaptation, and integration can help us navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence and resilience. By embracing the wisdom of others and making it our own, we can continue to grow and evolve, no matter where we are on our personal journey.

Exploring a Veterinary Technology Program can open the door to a myriad of career paths, one of which surprisingly includes becoming an author. While the leap from veterinary medicine to writing might seem vast, numerous alumni have bridged this gap, harnessing their detailed knowledge and firsthand experiences to enrich their storytelling.

The Unseen Bridge Between Veterinary Science and Storytelling

Consider the journey of a veterinary technician who transitions into a successful writer. This professional, originally trained in animal healthcare, leverages their depth of medical and behavioral understanding of animals to create compelling, authentic narratives in literature. The critical thinking and attention to detail necessary in a veterinary program translate seamlessly into the meticulous craft of writing.

The Foundation: A Robust Education in Veterinary Technology

The core curriculum of a veterinary technology program is designed not only to impart essential medical knowledge but also to enhance skills in communication and problem-solving. These programs typically cover a wide range of topics from anatomy and physiology to pharmacology and anesthesiology, preparing graduates for immediate entry into clinical environments. Yet, these technical skills also provide a unique perspective and factual accuracy that can vividly animate literary works.

Real-Life Example: From Clinics to Novels

Take, for instance, the story of Alex, a graduate from a renowned veterinary technology program. During his tenure in a bustling veterinary hospital, Alex encountered countless cases that highlighted the resilience, suffering, and profound bonds between pets and their owners. These experiences not only deepened his empathy but also filled him with stories that begged to be told. After years in the field, he began to pen a novel that wove these real-life encounters into a rich tapestry of drama and compassion.

Leveraging Experience into Narrative Gold

The shift from veterinary medicine to writing involves translating technical expertise into engaging, relatable content. Alex’s novel, for instance, features a protagonist who is a veterinary technician fighting to save the lives of animals in a small coastal town. His detailed descriptions of medical procedures, ethical dilemmas, and the emotional rollercoaster associated with animal care lend authenticity and gravitas to his narratives.

Educational Pathways: Starting Your Journey

For those intrigued by both animal care and writing, enrolling in a Veterinary Technology Program offers a comprehensive start. These programs not only provide the medical grounding necessary for veterinary practice but also foster critical observational skills that are crucial in writing. A solid foundation in veterinary science can uniquely position individuals to capture stories of veterinary care with nuance and precision.

Beyond the Clinic: Veterinary Technicians in the Literary World

The trend of veterinary technicians turning to writing is supported by a broader movement within healthcare professions where practitioners seek to share their specialized insights through creative outlets. Books written by those in the vet tech field can range from practical advice for pet owners to thrilling fictional tales that feature veterinary heroes.

Conclusion: Unleashing the Potential of Veterinary Education

The narrative skills developed in a veterinary technology program can unexpectedly enhance one’s ability to tell stories. For those who are passionate about animal care and have a knack for writing, this educational path offers not just a career but a portal to a new form of expression. Real-life experiences in the field provide a fertile ground for stories that resonate with authenticity and emotional depth, proving that the pen can be as mighty as the stethoscope.

In sum, a Veterinary Technology Program does not just create technicians; it can also birth authors who bring the world of animal care into the realms of literature, providing a fresh lens through which to view both the challenges and beauties of veterinary medicine.

I couldn’t scream for help. I couldn’t beg for my mother. I couldn’t even whisper the words “I’m sorry.” I had tried begging them to stop. I had tried staying silent and emotionless. I had tried showing my A photograph of author Joshua Elyashivhumanity, pain and fear. All of those encouraged the guards to beat me harder. I knew some of them were enraged when I showed no pain or fear. I knew others were enraged when I showed “weakness” by crying or wincing. I had witnesses the guards getting aroused by begging and pleading for mercy, and the thought of being raped by a guard was more terrifying than dying. After months of being beaten three times per day, at nearly every shift change, I had learned a lesson that profoundly impacted my ability to survive fife years in hell: the only thing that bullies truly fear is someone crazy enough to enjoy being bullied. It takes all of their power away, all of their control.

I started taunting the guards, and later the inmates who picked fights with me: “Is that the best you can do? Please sir, can I have some more?”. Other times, I would encourage them to keep going. “Let it out, hit me again, please, it will make you feel better.” And later, I would taunt while insulting, “Is that the best you can do? My grandmother hit me harder than that for eating her chocolate covered prunes!”

I learned very quickly that asking them for more derailed them. Mentally, they could not comprehend it, and as a result it scared them. What kind of freak was I? Telling them to take out their anger one me derailed them because it made them feel guilty, cognitive dissonance of them knowing that it would not make them feel better, or so I told myself. Maybe they just thought I was deranged. With the inmates, it derailed them because I was laughing at them instead of cowering in fear. That lack of fear in the face of pain or danger was unfamiliar to them, and thus it terrified them.

Underneath the bravado and nonchalance, I was dying inside. I had given up hope months prior, long before I figured out how to shorten the length or intensity of the beatings. I was hoping that they would kill me by accident. Eventually they put Ben in the room with me, and I had Ben kill me. I was dead for nearly 5 minutes before some asshole in a white dress with a beard decided it was not my time. I really do not know what God was wearing but I knew he was an asshole for sending me back to suffer more. Be careful what you speak into existence, right?

I was being starved, tortured, demeaned, dehumanized, abused, and forced to do things that were unspeakable. This went on for a year. After the year of physical beatings and torture, four more years of torture were to follow, although they were to be less predictable, more psychological, and I would never know who the enemy was. So how did I survive? Where did I find my resilience? Where did I find hope? I am supposed to talk about the moments of hope, strength, and determination that kept me going in the darkest of times, but there was no hope. Not until nearly a year AFTER I was released. I never found hope. But I did survive.

The strength was simple: if my 4’2” tall, gentle, pacifist grandmother could survive years in the ghettos followed by years in the Nazi concentration camps all before she was 20 years old, how could I quit when what I was enduring couldn’t ever be as terrible, and could never have required even a fraction of the strength she had? The determination came from somewhere much darker. The determination came from a need for vengeance, a need for revenge. I was determined that I would leave a mark on them just as deep as the ones they left on my mind and my soul. Five years later, I still have terrible scars on my mind, as well as on my body. I was determined to get out, set up a charity event get the media to publicly invite them to come in a manner they could not refuse because it was for charity, they would be forced by public opinion and possibly by their employer to come, sign a waiver, and get in the ring with me for “free Krav Maga and Jujitsu” lessons. I was determined to get revenge in a manner that allowed me to legally do to them what they did to me, publicly, and in a manner that made me look like the guy. That was the determination that kept me going.

I am also supposed to talk about lessons learned and personal growth, and the personal growth that I experienced as a result of my time asking to suffer more is this: by the time I had the money, resources, connections, and ability to actually get my revenge, I no longer wanted it. Along the way to get established enough to make that happen, I became a business owner, a pillar of my community, a husband, and a father. I could argue that they were all steps towards having the reach needed to make it happen, and that would be true.

But equally true would be that I have found something that matters more and has inspired me more than anything else in my life combined-love. Becoming a dad has taught me the three greatest lessons in life: how to love, how to forgive, and how to not do stupid shit because I have to set a healthy example for my daughter. My time with my little girl is more precious to me and more healing than any revenge will ever be.

They may never experience me punching them in the face, but they will have to live with the fact that I survived, I have an abundance of love in my life, and I forgive them. That is the best revenge I can ever have.

Privilege Lost

The front cover of Privilege Lost by Joshua ElyashivMany nice young upper-middle class white boys have dreamed about being the ultimate bad-ass. Few have been forced to prove it. For straight-A student and suburban Jewish boy Joshua Elyashiv, the dream of being tough and invincible, like his heroes Jason Bourne and Bruce Lee to name just a few, was so overwhelming that he convinced his parents to put him through military school where he became a decorated martial arts pro.

Then, through a fluke chain of events that Joshua never could have predicted, he was arrested and sentenced to 18 months in prison for a clerical error. After a brutal confrontation with a violent guard, the sentence was extended to five years, hard time. Worst of all, his father cut off all contact.

For five relentless years, Joshua was forced to defend himself against some of the toughest, most ruthless men in the world. Incredibly, he survived-and never gave up the desperate fight to prove to his father that he was innocent. Even more incredibly, along the way, Joshua learned the true meaning of strength-inner and spiritual-and discovered that empathy, compassion, and knowing when to walk away from a conflict is the purest form of strength.

PRIVILEGE LOST is the true first-hand account of an “everyday nice guy” who had to fight for his life among some of the most violent and dangerous men alive, in some of the grimmest cages in the world. This gripping memoir explores the horrific violence he endured, traversing the bridge between adrenaline-pumping life and death moments and those deeply introspective agonies where Joshua came face to face with the reality behind his fantasies.

Along the way, he learned that true kindness can come from the most broken souls, and that so much of what we call justice is really just smoke and mirrors to protect those with power and privilege. With humor and pathos, PRIVILEGE LOST looks across economic, cultural, racial, and religious boundaries with wide open eyes, confronting the harsh realities of a criminal justice system in deep need of reform.

Like Piper Kerman’s Orange is the New Black, Susanna Kaysen’s Girl Interrupted, and Avi Steinberg’s Running the Books, PRIVILEGE LOST is a deeply personal memoir, with a message of survival and growth that so many can relate to.

Christopher L. Smith’s Homeless to Hopkins is the author’s personal story about how he worked to achieve his dream. He started from a very low point in his life and worked all the way up to his now successful career. He went through things that not everyone experiences. He’d get knocked down and just get right back up. He held his head up and stayed optimistic all the way.

Christopher L. Smith’s story was compelling to say the least. It felt like each page was telling you to never give up! I felt like I was getting to know him as I read along and I was also rooting for him along the way. Homeless to Hopkins is such a good read, and I’d imagine it inspires everyone who reads it. It’ll give you a healthy dose of optimism and hope, which I think we all need nowadays. This was a very fulfilling read.

Homeless to Hopkins

“I wish I could just die,” I said to myself as my teeth chattered and my body shook with cold. Knowing I would probably still wake in the morning with my hair frozen to the door, I curled up in a ball, trying to The front cover of Homeless to Hopkins by Christopher L. Smithfind some warmth in the car that was my bedroom. Sadness consumed me like an infection; it had become the norm for me to wake up every day feeling broken.

Most nights like this, all I could hope for was to die in my sleep to be rid of the pain. Despite the terrible nights, I still woke up, dressed, and went to my only refuge, my high school.

This was my life, often alone, cold, sad, and hungry. My youth was different than most, but this was my reality.

However, despite the hardship that was my life and being homeless, something led me on, something saw me through. I survived, I found hope, and eventually, a life even better than I had imagined. Even though I so often faced darkness, I discovered light, laughter, and happiness.

I journeyed from that broken, homeless teenager sleeping in the car to eventually being a Medical Doctor at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins. But most important of all, I found me, I found joy.

This is my story.

In Screw U: A Memoir, Jim Masiello bares his soul in a raw and unfiltered account of his experiences with the IRS as an entrepreneur. From the first page, the first sentence even, I was invested. Something about his journey from such difficult times to absolute success is nothing short of remarkable, and his revelations about the darker side of the financial industry are eye-opening.

I don’t have much knowledge about the financial industry personally. So, I don’t know what it was that made me pick up this book. I really liked the title, and once I opened it I saw that same authenticity and honesty reflected within the pages. He doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges he faced or the mistakes he made along the way. As someone who has faced my own share of struggles, I found solace and inspiration in Masiello’s words. Screw U is a book that will stay with me in my mind. Highly recommend it.

Screw U: A Memoir

Most people’s worst nightmare is a problem with the IRS or the bank. Jim had them both coming after him for tens of millions of dollars.

Jim Masiello is widely known as the founder of the insurance giant SIAA, the Strategic Insurance Agency The front cover of Screw U: A Memoir by Jim MasielloAlliance, but what people don’t know is that along the road to building his company Jim had to fight through a devastating situation with the IRS and fend off a flurry of improbable threats from big banks looking to bring him down.

Far from the professional and cordial experiences most people have with their banks, Jim has stories to share from his time in the insurance and real estate worlds that shed light on the darker side of the financial industry. When millions of dollars are on the line, things turn ugly fast, but this scrappy boy from the wrong side of the tracks had a mouth to match and wasn’t afraid to let anyone have it.

Screw You is the true story of a man who didn’t have anything handed to him and had to work hard, often against outright belligerence and jealousy, reaching the highest echelons of the business world in the process. Whether it’s tense negotiations, courtroom drama, shocking letters announcing millions of dollars in debt out of thin air, or the jaw-dropping chicanery of banking executives, Jim Masiello has seen it all.

Shane T. Clark’s The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart is an interesting story with psychological depth. The suspense and intrigue had me hooked from the very first page. The author’s style of storytelling drew me into a world where nothing is as it seems, and every character is hiding secrets of their own. You’ll find yourself right there alongside the characters in places like a gritty prison setting and the quiet streets of Sherman, Ohio. Clark does a really great job at creating these places in which his unforgettable characters can come to life.

This novel keeps a relentless pace and goes into unflinching exploration of the human psyche. I loved the dark tones. As the story goes on you’re confronted with uncomfortable truths and moral ambiguity that makes you think. Nothing is black and white! The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart is a unique and rich novel I’d definitely recommend it. I can’t wait to see what Shane T. Clark has in store next!

The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart

Some vendettas can never be forgotten…

When Sherman Rehabilitation Center suffers its first murder in decades, authorities race to find a motive as the media swarms. The brutality is unprecedented, even in a prison setting. One week later, eighty-seven-year-old Elmer Ray walks into the local Ohio Highway Patrol Post, claiming he has the answers. First, they need to hear about the two most interesting people in the world: Adrian Franklin and Conner Wallace.

The front cover of The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart by Shane T. ClarkAdrian Franklin, the young neighbor of Elmer Ray, lived a troubled life of neglect and abuse. He had a bad haircut and a worst nickname. The older man tries to take the boy under his wing in a way no one else has ever done. For Adrian, most see a quick temper and lost soul. Elmer sees something different in him, a sense of loyalty and a yearning to feel loved.

Conner Wallace, a British National, a drifter on a motorcycle, and a pugilist with a quick wit, roamed the west and lived by an unbreakable moral code that got him in more trouble than he bargained for. After a five-year bit in a Nevada prison, he finds a safe haven in the underground fight scene on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

What does a young boy and foreigner have to do with a brutal prison murder in the sleepy town of Sherman, Ohio? Only Elmer Ray knows the answers. And he isn’t giving them until the Post Commander hears how their lives converge with an Appalachian drug dealer, a sexual predator, and a mob boss to influence the brutality in that prison cell.

The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart is a shocking and raw account combining a coming-of-age tale with a disturbing psychological thriller.

Dawn Brotherton has crafted captivating blend of vintage allure and contemporary suspense in her soon-to-be released Oaky With a Hint of Murder. Scheduled to debut on March 12th, 2024, Oaky is poised to enchant readers with its cozy yet compelling mystery, marking an intriguing installment in the Eastover Treasure series. Brotherton tells us that this book offers the ideal escape for leisurely reading, requiring no prior familiarity with the series for full enjoyment. So, seize the opportunity to embark on this adventure–you may just discover your next beloved cozy mystery series! From the mystical tales of Seneca Lake to the eerie occurrences unfolding at Songscape Winery, our interview promises to be as indulgent and satisfying as a meticulously aged vintage wine.

Tell us about your book.

Oaky With a Hint of Murder is the second in the Eastover Treasure mystery series, although it can be read as a standalone. Oaky is a cozy mystery, so a light, easy read. Aury and Scott travel to the Finger Lakes area of New York to help their cousins figure out the truth about the Seneca warrior who is supposedly haunting their winery. The Eastover series is unique in that each book has historical chapters that tie to the current-day mystery. The first book, Eastover Treasures, reaches back to the days of the Civil War, while Oaky hits the late 1700s.

What is the primary benefit that your potential reader will gain from reading this book?

The historical chapters are a chance to learn about the past without reading a textbook. I do a lot of research to get the facts right. It’s also a good introduction to historical fiction, although the main storyline is contemporary. Because it’s a cozy, it’s safe for young readers who read above their grade level: no graphic violence, sex, or swearing.

If you had to compare this book to any other book out there, which book would it be?

The Eastover Treasures series has portions written in the past like the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon but without the time travel. My characters stay within their respective time period, and each book in my series will cover a different short period in history. For those of us who grew up with Nancy Drew, I like to think of Aury as a thirty-something version of that amateur sleuth.

Hundreds of thousands of books come out every year. Why should someone buy this book?

Because I write in many genres, my cozies have taken on their own cross-genre feel between cozy mystery and historical fiction. Oaky doesn’t use the Miss Marple trope of a little old lady in a British country village, which are favored in many cozies. Aury is in her thirties, a professional woman with varied interests and hobbies. I hope to create an atmosphere where the reader is introduced to new things along with Aury and will look forward to her next adventure. As an added benefit, the series covers a range of interests, including wine making and tasting, quilting, and crafting.

Who is your target audience?

Oaky With a Hint of Murder is a very fast read and perfect for the beach or for a person who doesn’t have much time. Because it’s a cozy mystery, it’s relaxing to curl up and read without straining to follow too many twists and turns. My primary audience is women, 45 and up, who enjoy crafting but have little time to read.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage?

I write in a variety of genres and my background has definitely played a part in the various stories. I spent 28 years in the Air Force and took the inspiration for the Jackie Austin mysteries from a stalker I had during my first duty assignment. I’m a huge quilter and crafter. The idea for Eastover Treasures came to me while I was on a quilt retreat. I’m also a wine lover. Oaky takes place in the Finger Lakes of New York. My eldest daughter went to school at Cornell, so I spent many weekends supporting the local wineries. It made the research a lot of fun.

The Lady Tigers middle grade series is about a softball team where the girls learn being a part of a team is more than what happens on the field. I grew up playing fastpitch softball, then coaching and umpiring. It’s easiest to write about what you know. Parts of my life come through in my storytelling.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since publishing your work.

I write across genres and do many shows and signings across the country. When a reader goes out of their way to tell me they are waiting for my next book or replies to my newsletter, I’m sure I’m dreaming. At a recent Christmas show, a child ran toward my booth with arms open wide, crying out, “Scout! Scout!” Scout is a chameleon dragon from my picture book If I Look Like You. The joy in the eyes of a young child—that’s the impression I want to make on readers.

How would you describe your writing style?

I was in the Air Force for 28 years, so my writing style is pretty direct and to the point. We were taught to leave out the fluff. My stories read faster because I prefer to move my story through dialogue, which allows the reader to get to know the characters better. It’s been a learning curve for me to make sure to add enough description to set the scene properly. Lol.

Are your characters pure fiction, or did you draw from people you know?

I think parts of all characters are pulled from someone the writer knows. I’m no exception. None of my characters are 100 percent one person; they have traits from many friends and acquaintances. If I pull a trait from a friend, I hope they see it as a compliment that I was thinking of them.

Are you more of a character artist or a plot-driven writer?

Definitely plot-driven. After my first draft, I always have to go back through and add more character elements. That’s fitting with my personality. I’m very action-driven and like to get things done. I have a hard time staying still.

What do you hope to accomplish with your book other than selling it?

I’m all about lessons. My children’s books come with free teacher lesson plans or book club discussion questions to help kids get more out of their reading. For my older readers, I still think there is goodness to continually learning. My cozy mysteries in the Eastover Treasures series have a historical element, and the Jackie Austin mysteries will give the reader a glance inside the military from a woman’s perspective.

Where can our readers purchase your book?

Oaky With a Hint of Murder will be released to all the bookstores on 12 Mar 2024. If you can’t wait that long, you can order a copy directly from my website.
